Biography

Wendy Tan was born in Malaysia. She later lived in Hong Kong for over a decade. Currently, she is living in Hays, Kansas. Tan has been passionate about art since she was very young, and she continues to develop as an artist to this day. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Multi Media (Sculpture) from Fort Hays State University in the United States, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Distinction in Painting from RMIT in Australia.

Tan’s works have been greatly influenced by nature. She loves small flowers and plants - particularly dry and curly leaves. She said, “they are small but may still have their unique values that are yet attractive. For example, they own beautiful detailed lines, textures, and forms; however, we easily ignore as we do not pay close attention to them. Only if we magnify them, their insignificant values appear to attract our attention.” Her works bring to us a strong implication about how our daily lives should be blessed from the social, critical and political perspectives.

She has received numerous awards throughout her artistic career including; the “Best of Show” Award from Yosemite Museum Gallery, the “Best of Photographer” Award from Forum Magazine, the Cash/Merit Awards from municipal Arts Councils, and the Art Study Tour Award in Switzerland.

She has exhibited her work in prestigious galleries and museums nationally and internationally such as The Huntington (Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens) in San Marino, CA, Yosemite Museum Gallery in Yosemite, CA, Kings Arts Center in Hanford, CA, Carnegie Art Center in Turlock, CA, Gallery 5 at Gallery Row, Oakhurst,CA, Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dannis, MA, Wallowa Valley Arts Council in Joseph, OR, Mark Arts in Wichita, KS, CityArts Art Gallery in Wichita KS, Wesleyan University Art Center in Salina KS, Hays Arts Councils in Hays, KS, and Fine Art Asia in Hong Kong.
